This blog is primarily concerned with NIS 2007 (and a bit on NIS 08). I have nothing to say about more recent versions.

This blog is more or less dormant (except for occasional comments on related news), and is being left on-line as a historical record and perhaps as a warning to future generations of anti-virus coders.

AVG fixes fake traffic scans

"...bring out a new version of its software on July 9th, minus the problematic pre-scanning of results tool." HERE

Peace and tranquility will return on Wednesday or so.

You should really take a look at the new Norton 2009 betas. It looks like Symantec is going after a lot of the issues you (and many others) point out:

That's nice. But they should also provide a 110% discount to those that have suffered over the past few years with the every-increasing stupidity of their crappy products.

They been very stupid and we (current and former) users deserve some compensation. Not to mention my it-was-so-bad I-had-to-blog time.

They need to make a peace offering to the user community. Starting to stop being stupid is just the first step.

If they expect already-burned users to try again, forget it.

I agree that this is only a first step.

... It seems a bit odd that Symantec is fixing all of the things that you use this blog to (rightfully) complain about and yet you are unwilling to download and try the beta so that you can point out to your readers all of the new things that suck and some of the things that have improved... it is a bit like continuing to complain that Ford sucks because of the Ford Pinto from 1980.

Although, I guess I shouldn't expect too much objectivity from a blog that is any company's name followed by "Sucks".

The objectivity of this blog is perfectly demonstrated by the many cut-and-paste screen captures where I clearly and definitively point out the many obvious mistakes made by Symantec programmers. In other words, I'm not making this shit up. The cause-effect relationship that led to this blog started with Symantec.

Now, I'm happy to hear that Symantec has decided to stop making so many stupid mistakes. That's nice.

It's like when a husband decides to stop beating up his wife. It doesn't mean that I'm going to recommend that everyone jump back into into bed with Symantec the day after the abuse stops.

In fact, for historical reasons, I still have Norton Internet Security 2007 installed on two of my three PCs. Although there seems to be some slight improvements over the past few months, there are still many stupid mistakes evident. Is Symantec planning to fix-up the existing user base for NIS 07?

Or do they seriously expect everyone to uninstall NIS 07, run a registry cleaner to clean-up after the probably botched uninstall, install a beta version, help to debug that, then uninstall the beta, run a registry cleaner to clean-up the probably botched uninstall, and purchase the new version, and then install the new version, and help to debug that one further?

If that's what is expected of us, then perhaps the expectations are a bit high.

PS: Note that I'm not deleting your comment with the link to the betas. In fact, when I have time, I will probably copy extracts from this comment thread up to the main blog. So please don't question my objectivity. This whole Symentec Sucks mess started with Symantec's poor decision-making skills.

And we have yet to hear an acknowledgement (let alone an apology) from them.

Glad to hear that you will give the beta a try at some point... and your analogy made much more sense than mine did.

As for buying a new version, I'm pretty sure that if you pay for the definition update subscription you get new versions for free (well, as part of the subscription).

I'm looking forward to seeing all the things that still suck in the '09 beta on your blog.

Symantec just offered NIS 08 to me (as a replacement for NIS 07).

See post in blog.
